Are there any alternatives to Adobe Flash Player?

Adobe Flash programs will only run in Adobe Flash Player (or one of its even less stable clones, like Gnash). It's the nature of proprietary formats. There are alternatives that developers can use, such as Microsoft's Silverlight, but you as the consumer don't get to choose which one a program uses.
