1994 ford f150 back up light problems?

i have a 94 f150with a 5 speed standard, i recently replaced the back up switch and rewired it. The switch itself works when depressed, but when i connect it to the transmission and place it in reverse the lights do not come on. the problem is not the switch or the wiring, but something in the transmission. Anyone know what might be wrong
