Can putting a mouthguard that doesnt fit bruise your gums?

I had a mouth guard because I clenched my teeth and it really hurt my mouth so I stopped wearing it. Today I noticed that my gums were a black purplish color. I wanted to know if mouthguards could do that or is it something else. Thank you.
